When atoms in light are in an extremely excited state they may present themselves in the form of purple lightning. This occurrence is not only rare, but extremely beautiful. The violet lightning color is due to the presence of red lines of hydrogen spectrum from water vapor. They are most commonly found in rainy storms at low altitudes.
